Avocado and Oatmeal Clay Mask

I love relaxing on Sunday evenings with a nice warm bath and a homemade facial mask. Here's one of my favourite recipes for my Avocado and Oatmeal clay mask! After mixing the ingredients I put it on my face and sat for 20 minutes. After rinsing, my face really felt hydrated- like I just went to the spa!

I used:

oats- calms redness, heals blemishes, exfoliates

green clay- draws out dirt, oil and other impurities

avocado- moisturizes, reduces the appearance of wrinkles

egg whites- maintains elasticity of skin, reduces fine lines

Most these ingredients may already be in your kitchen -BONUS! I used green clay for oily and problem skin, but you could use any clay that you find at your favourite beauty store to make this mask.

Let me know if you've tried my recipe for this homemade facial mask! I'd love to hear from you :)

How To- Using Makeup Brushes

Just take a quick peek in your favourite beauty supply store and you might be overwhelmed with the amount of makeup brushes you can find! At first glance there may seem like a thousand brushes just for applying makeup, but not all brushes are created equal! Here's a makeup brush "cheat sheet" so you won't have to be as confused as I was the first time I bought a set of brushes. Once you buy your first set of beautiful brushes, refer to the picture below so you know how to use them!

My favourite brushes are:
Powder Brush: The long, fluffy bristles evenly diffuse loose powders.
Alternate use: Sweep blush from the apples of your cheeks along your cheekbones.
All-Over Eye Shadow Brush: Use an eye shadow brush to evenly apply powder and cream shadows.
Blending Brush: The fluffy bristles diffuse eye shadow in the crease of your eye.
Concealer Brush: Use a small, synthetic brush to pinpoint specific areas that need extra coverage.
Angled Eyeliner Brush: This brush easily lines lashes with cream or gel liner or shadow.
Kabuki Brush: This big brush is perfect for softly applying bronzers and powders, and for evenly distributing product across your face or body.

And of course:
Beauty Blender: Use the sponge's broad sides to smooth out product on your face. Use the tip to reach creases around the nose and to pinpoint small areas.

March 2016 Ipsy Glam Bag Review

My current makeup subscription box is from Ipsy. I was a bit skeptical about a monthly beauty and makeup subscription box because I didn't want to end up with a bunch of products I couldn't use or didn't know how to use. Each month you get full size or deluxe-sized products in a cute makeup bag, and I was sold after checking out their previous bags. If you're not very adventurous with makeup like me, it's a great way to build your makeup collection on the cheap and expand your makeup expertise!

The March Ipsy Glam Bag was full of swag to get you ready for spring! The cute bag came in a variety of colours which was the first time Ipsy offered a variety of bag designs. I got a very nice red and green floral print bag. Its the perfect size for packing essentials when you need a little overnight makeup bag.

In my bag:

Marc Anthony blow dry smoothing cream

Essence Make Me Brow Eyebrow Gel Mascara
Beau Gachis Eyebrow Brush
Make Up For Ever Hydrating Primer
Temptu Bronzer

I rate the March Ipsy Glam Bag 4/5!

My eyebrow game is pretty simple and I usually use an eyebrow pencil to achieve the look I want, so I was stoked to experiment with new products that could make my eyebrows look even more fab! Here's a pic of my brows filled in with a plain old brown eyebrow pencil. Pretty normal looking right??

More about the products inside:

Marc Anthony blow dry smoothing cream- I CRAVE moisture since my hair is chemically treated. This blow dry cream promises to "hold hair straight, frizz-free AND shiny for up to three days" SAY WHHAAAAAAT???? I really love the texture of this and since I'm only on my first day I can't comment on its three day promise. So far so good! UPDATE--->After the third day my hair was still smooth. I did use more cream to touch up the ends but this product held true to their word!

Essence Make Me Brow Eyebrow Gel Mascara- I was really disappointed with this product. Not only was it too dark for me, but it made my brows feel sticky and look fake. I felt like this was an unnecessary step and didn't see any benefit to using this on my brows. I will be sticking to my regular brow routine and TOSS this product in the trash.

Beau Gachis Eyebrow Brush- Now this was something I could use! I love this brush and it held the product nicely. I was able to make some really sharp lines with this tool. LOVE!

Make Up For Ever Hydrating Primer- I confess, I never used primer before. GAH! I'm glad for the sample but I'm a simple girl with an even simpler makeup routine and always thought I could just skip the primer. I really like the texture and it absorbed very quickly. It did make my skin feel smoother but I wouldn't say my makeup felt any different. After one use it was hard to say if this will be an essential step in my makeup routine.

Temptu Bronzer- This product felt a bit watery coming out of the tube but ended up delivering a really nice shimmer. Definitely keep in mind that "a little dab'll do" when using this liquid bronzer. It has a very concentrated shimmer that spreads well on the skin.

What did you get in your March Glam Bag? I'd love to hear from you!

My Evening Skin Care Routine

It took me many years to figure out what skin care routine worked best for my skin. Many. MANY. Years. I've tried almost every cleaner and acne system you can buy and it felt like no matter how much money I've spent on products, I still battled with blemishes on my face and patches of dry skin. I bought into the dream that I could have clear skin like my favourite celebrities if I bought that $50 cleanser. Isn't it supposed to be that we pay for what we get?? Shouldn't expensive products work no matter what? I wasted a lot of time and money only to realize that those expensive products (in my case) DID. NOT. WORK. Nope, not even a little bit.

Just last year I tried a new combination: a mix of high and low end products that included a bit more pricey night cream (I never used night cream before) and cleanser that I haven't used since high school. Most of the time I try to take advantage of whatever deals are going on in store, and just my luck, the Clean & Clear facial scrub was on sale for about half price. BONUS! I was tired of spending tons of money on cleansers. It WAS taking away from my makeup budget after all! I was lucky enough to figure out this magical combination and I woke up every morning with the softest face I ever had. I seriously had to stop myself from stroking my cheeks while I was brushing my teeth!

Here's my evening skin care routine:

Cleanse with Clean & Clear facial scrub (about $10)

I love the way my face feels after using this scrub. It's very gentle and smells great. I know, I know...It's meant for the morning but I just love using it as part of my evening routine. This product contains tiny plastic microbeads  called polyethylene beads. The scoop is, these little beads are not filtered properly during sewage treatment and have the potential to harm marine life (major booooooo!) As much as I love this product, I am currently on the hunt for something more eco-friendly.

Moisturize with Marcelle Gene Youth Night Cream (about $50)

I was turned on to this product after finding it on sale (you know how much I love a good sale!) and am very satisfied with this product. It absorbs quickly and feels verrrry nice!

Ahava Eye Cream (about $40)

My first experience with an eye cream and was gifted to me by my mother-in-law after her trip to Israel. I'm satisfied with this product however I am not convinced that it's a necessary step. This product has the same ingredients that are in regular moisturizers that can be used all over the face, leading me to believe it's just another facial moisturizer.

Clean & Clear Advantage Mark Treatment (about $20)

I like this product because I can actually feel it working. This is both a good thing and bad thing. This product contains alcohol, and while I didn't experience any irritation with this product, someone with sensitive skin would not like this and might perceive the tingling sensation as burning.

Combined with eating a healthier diet and drinking plenty of water, I have the best skin I've ever had. Most of the time I don't wear makeup but having blemish free skin makes it so much easier to apply makeup on the days that I do decide to put on a little glam! Let me know if you have an evening skin care routine. I'd love to hear from you!

Eating Your Way to Good Skin

Many dermatologists agree that what we put in our mouths is just as important as what we put on our skin.
Foods get digested and broken down into vitamins, minerals and amino acids that your body can use to build healthy skin. If you crash diet or eat highly processed foods, your skin won’t be as strong and supple as it could be. For example, if you don’t eat enough protein, you are depriving your skin of the amino acids that go into making collagen (which makes your skin strong) and elastic tissue (which makes it supple). The best skin diet is one that involves eating vegetables of different colors for every meal and a green juice every day but here are some foods that really pack a mean punch!
Clear skin starts from within, and one of the best, cheapest and most effective ways to get there is to help your body flush out toxins by drinking plenty of water. Not only will upping your fluid levels help to keep your brains fully functional and therefore better able to cope with stress, but it also replenishes water in the cells. Make sure you drink the recommended eight glasses of water a day, and drink more after exercise.

February 2016 Ipsy Glam Bag Review

My first subscription box was from Ipsy.

The February Ipsy Glam Bag was full of awesome swag perfect for those that love PINK! First let me talk about the cute bag. I was so excited to open the bright pink envelope that arrived in the mail, only to get even MORE excited to see the super cool makeup bag my new samples were in.

In my bag:

It Cosmetics concealer

Skin fix ultra rich body butter
Bellá Pierre blush
Ciaté nail polish
Vintage cosmetics gloss

NONE of which I have used before but always wanted to try. I was glad that Ipsy sent things that I could use and yes, I now use MOST of these items.  I wasn't a fan of the lipgloss from Vintage cosmetics because it was too sticky and way too sparkly. My six year old daughter on the other hand...LOVED IT!

Check out my fresh mani thanks to my Ciaté sample. I LOVE IT and I hope you do too!

I rate the February Ipsy Glam Bag 4/5!

More about the products inside:

It Cosmetics concealer- I absolutely love this concealer. I have never purchased concealer before so it was a nice treat to get this in my Glam Bag. It felt very smooth on my skin and didn't flake or crack under my tinted moisturizer. I now use this all the time!

Skin fix ultra rich body butter- This was another product that I never heard of. It loved the texture and it absorbed well into my skin. It's the perfect product to keep in my purse for when I need a quick moisture fix.

Bellá Pierre blush- LOVE LOVE LOVE. This blush went on and stayed put all day. It felt luxurious and complimented my skin perfectly.

Ciaté nail polish- I confess, I never purchased a Ciaté product before, but after this sweeeeeet sample, I'm hooked!!! I have serious Olivia Pope envy and this colour was just killer! It was a very creamy polish that went on very nicely. It wasn't very long lasting and I noticed I had to reapply after just three days, even though I used an Essie Gel Top Coat.

Vintage cosmetics gloss- My least favourite product. I didn't like how it made my lips stick together and the shimmer was waaaaayyyyy too much for my tastes. I would not buy this product in store and do not recommend this gloss to those that prefer subtle shine.

How it all began...

My unhealthy addiction began with the February GlamBag from Ipsy. The moment I opened that beautiful pink package I became a full fledged makeup junkie. I'm so happy that I took the leap of faith to subscribe. I've always been a conservative shopper. I purchased makeup products I was used to using and didn't dare try anything new. It took me a few months to get the courage to sign up for the Ipsy GlamBag. Let me tell you I was NOT disappointed!!! I loved everything in the bag and was even turned on to new brands and products. Well worth the $10 monthly fee.

Tell me about the moment you fell in love with makeup, I'd love to hear your stories!!
